Weekly Devotion
July 28, 2025
Updated Weekly

Dear Brothers, Sisters and Friends in Christ,
As we reflect on the nature of sin and repentance, it is important to recognize the gravity and complexity of these concepts. Sin, at its core, is the intentional disobedience of God’s laws and the rejection of His perfect righteousness. It is a universal reality that affects all of humanity, causing separation and brokenness in our relationship with God.
However, through repentance, we can receive forgiveness and restoration. In Romans 3:23, it states, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This verse reminds us of our inherent sinful nature and the need for repentance. But thankfully, in 1 John 1:9, it reassures us, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” This highlights the power of repentance and God’s grace to forgive us when we turn away from our sinful ways.
Let us pray, “Dear Heavenly Father, help us to understand the weight and consequences of sin, and guide us to repent with sincerity and humility. We thank you for your unfailing love and mercy, and we seek your forgiveness and restoration. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”🙏🏼❤️
Very Respectfully and In His Service
Rev. Dr. Rodney A. Chapman
Extraordinary Women of the Bible
ELISABETH
"FAITHFUL MOTHER OF JOHN THE BAPTIST"
THE GOSPEL OF LUKE
Elisabeth is an important figure in the Bible, known for her strong faith and role in God's divine plan. She may not be mentioned as often as other biblical characters, but her story is very meaningful and teaches us valuable lessons today. In this article, we will explore the background and context of Elisabeth's life and examine her significant contribution to God's divine plan. We will also highlight three key lessons we can learn from her faith journey, supported by scripture.
Background and Context:
Elisabeth was a descendant of Aaron, making her part of the priestly tribe of Israel. She was married to Zechariah, a priest who served in the temple. The couple was known for their strong faith and devotion to God. However, despite their piety, they were unable to have children, which was seen as a shame and a curse in biblical times. In their old age, they had come to accept that they would not have children. One day, while Zechariah was serving in the temple, an angel appeared to him and announced that his wife would conceive and give birth to a son whom he would name John. Zechariah initially doubted this miraculous news, and the angel made him mute until the prophecy was fulfilled. As the promise was fulfilled, Elisabeth became pregnant, and she joyfully gave birth to John, who would later become known as John the Baptist.
Contribution to God's Divine Plan:
Elisabeth’s role in God’s divine plan was vital as she gave birth to John, who would prepare the way for Jesus, the Messiah. She and her husband raised John to be a faithful and brave prophet who boldly announced the coming of Jesus and baptized him in the Jordan River. Elisabeth’s steadfast faith and obedience to God’s plan ensured that his word was fulfilled, and she played an important role in fulfilling prophecy.
Lesson 1: Trust in God's Timing and Plan
One of the most important lessons we can learn from Elisabeth is to trust in God's timing and plan. Despite her advanced age and societal pressure to have children, she stayed faithful and patient, knowing that God's plan would be fulfilled at the right time. Similarly, we might face challenges and setbacks in our lives, but it is crucial to trust in God's plan and have faith that he has a purpose for us. As stated in Ecclesiastes 3:11, "He has made everything beautiful in its time."
Lesson 2: God Can Work Miracles in the Most Unlikely Situations
Pregnancy in her old age was seen as a miracle because she had been barren most of her life. It seemed unlikely and impossible, but with God, all things are possible. Her story reminds us that God can perform miracles even in the most unlikely situations, and we should never limit His power. In Luke 1:37, the angel Gabriel declares, “For with God, nothing will be impossible.”
Lesson 3: Remain Faithful During the Waiting Periods
Elisabeth's journey to motherhood was not an easy one. She endured years of disappointment and shame before receiving the promise of a child. However, during this waiting period, she remained faithful and continued to serve God with her whole heart. Waiting periods in our lives can be challenging, but it is essential to remain faithful and trust in God's plans. As we see in Isaiah 40:31, "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
In conclusion, Elisabeth's story is one of faith, patience, and obedience to God's divine plan. Her unwavering trust in God's timing and her contribution to his plan serve as a powerful example for us today. We can learn valuable lessons from her journey and apply them to our own lives. Let us remember to trust in God's timing, have faith in his ability to work miracles, and remain faithful during the waiting periods. As we do so, we can be confident that we are playing a significant role in God's divine plan, just like Elisabeth did.

Your Health and Wellness Matters
In the realm of Christ Jesus, the importance of both men’s and women’s health is greatly emphasized. It is believed that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, so we must care for them to the best of our abilities. This includes maintaining both physical and mental well-being. The teachings of Christ promote a balanced and nurturing lifestyle that encourages self-care and highlights the significance of rest and relaxation. Furthermore, both men and women are viewed as equal in the eyes of God, and therefore, their health and well-being are equally valued. In this way, the teachings of Christ advocate for a holistic approach to health, encompassing not only the physical but also the spiritual and emotional aspects. To fully serve and honor God, it is important for both men and women to prioritize their health and wellness in all aspects of their lives.

Men's Health and Wellness
Black men's health has been a long-standing issue that has plagued our community for far too long. Despite the many advancements in modern medicine, black men continue to face disproportionate health disparities and have a shorter life expectancy compared to other racial groups.
As we approach the end of the year, it is a perfect time for black men to take charge of their health by setting and going to an annual physical. In this article, we will explore the importance of annual physicals for black men and how it ties into the Gospel of Jesus Christ, providing three actionable steps for men to take for better health and well-being.
First and foremost, let us understand the significance of annual physicals for black men. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), black men have higher rates of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, which can be prevented or better managed through regular check-ups. Annual physicals allow for early detection and treatment of any existing health issues and provide an opportunity to assess overall health and make necessary lifestyle changes. Moreover, as followers of Christ, we are called to be good stewards of our bodies, which includes taking care of our physical health.
In the Bible, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and we are to honor God with our bodies. As black men, we must recognize that our physical health is connected to our spiritual health and well-being. Neglecting our bodies through poor health habits not only hurts our physical health, but it also affects our mental and spiritual health. By setting and going to an annual physical, we are taking a step towards honoring God with our bodies and being good stewards of the gift of life that He has given us.
Now, let us focus on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and how it relates to our physical health. In Mark 2:17, Jesus says, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." This verse highlights the importance of recognizing and acknowledging our physical weaknesses and seeking help. Going for an annual physical is an act of humility, admitting that we are not invincible and need medical assistance to maintain our health. It also reminds us that our ultimate healing and well-being come from Jesus Christ, who came to save us from our sins and give us eternal life.
Let us now discuss three actionable steps for black men to take for better health and well-being:
1. Schedule an annual physical: The first step is to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider for an annual physical. It is crucial to find a doctor who understands the unique health needs of black men and is culturally competent. Be open and honest with your doctor about your health concerns and follow their recommendations for preventive screenings and lifestyle changes.
2. Make healthy lifestyle choices: As black men, we are at a higher risk for chronic diseases, but many of these can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and avoiding harmful habits such as smoking and excessive drinking. By making these lifestyle choices, we can improve our overall health and well-being.
3. Seek support and accountability:
It can be challenging to make sustainable lifestyle changes on our own. That is why it is essential to seek support and accountability from our friends, family, and faith community. Surround yourself with people who will encourage and support you in your journey towards better health. As Proverbs 27:17 says, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
As black men, let us take charge of our health by setting and going to an annual physical. By doing so, we not only take care of our physical bodies, but we also honor God and prioritize our spiritual well-being. Let us remember that our ultimate healing and well-being come from Jesus Christ, and by following His teachings and seeking His guidance, we can achieve better health and live a fulfilling life. Remember, your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, let us honor God with it through taking care of our physical health.

Women's Health and Wellness
One of the most pressing issues facing black women today is their health. Despite advancements in medicine and technology, black women continue to experience disproportionate rates of chronic diseases such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes. Disparities in access to quality healthcare and resources for preventative care further exacerbate this situation.
As Christians, we are called to care for the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of all individuals, including our black sisters. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus teaches that true healing comes from the Lord and that it is our responsibility to help those who are suffering (Luke 9:11).
In light of this, here are three actions that women can take to address this issue.
1. Educate yourself on the unique challenges and factors that contribute to the health disparities faced by black women. This can include understanding the history of systemic racism in the healthcare system and its impact on access and treatment for black women. Proverbs 18:15 reminds us that "an intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge." By taking the time to educate yourself, you can better understand the issue and advocate for change.
2. Advocate for policy changes and equal access to healthcare for black women in your community. This may include supporting initiatives for affordable healthcare, speaking out against discrimination in healthcare, and supporting organizations working towards health equity. Proverbs 31:8-9 urges us to "speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." As women, it is your duty to use our voices and resources to advocate for the well-being of our black sisters.
3. Take care of your own health and encourage other women to do the same. Proverbs 3:7-8 reminds us to "not be wise in our own eyes" and to "fear the Lord and turn away from evil." This includes taking care of our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). By prioritizing our own health and modeling healthy habits, we can inspire and encourage black women in our lives to do the same. By taking these actions, we can work towards a society where black women are able to live healthy and abundant lives, in accordance with God's will for all of His children.

Family Health and Wellness
Black families face a multitude of health issues, from higher rates of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease to mental health challenges. These health disparities stem from factors such as limited access to quality healthcare, systemic racism, and socioeconomic inequalities.
However, as believers in Christ, we are called to care for our bodies as they are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). We are also called to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31), which includes prioritizing the health and well-being of our families.
To address this issue, here are three actions that black families can take:
1. Prioritize preventive care: Proactively seeking medical attention and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for black families. This can include regular check-ups, screenings, and making healthy choices like eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly.
2. Address mental health: The stigma surrounding mental health in the black community often prevents individuals and families from seeking help. However, it is essential to prioritize mental health and address concerns with the support of a healthcare professional. This could include therapy, support groups, or seeking spiritual guidance.
3. Advocate for equitable healthcare: As Christians, we are called to be advocates for justice and equality. This includes pushing for equitable healthcare for all, regardless of race or socioeconomic status. We can do this by supporting policies and initiatives that promote access to affordable healthcare for every member of our community.
As black families, it is important to prioritize our physical and mental health, not just for ourselves but also for our loved ones and our communities. By taking these actions and following the teachings of Christ, we can work towards reducing health disparities and promoting overall well-being for black families. Remember, our bodies are gifts from God, and it is our responsibility to care for them as we continue to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

This Week's Topic: "ENTITLEMENT"
The concept of entitlement is often associated with negative effects in both biblical and modern contexts. In the Bible, entitlement manifests as pride and self-centeredness, which contradicts the teachings of humility and selflessness. Proverbs 11:2 states, "When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom." This verse highlights the danger of entitlement, leading to disgrace and downfall.
Moreover, entitlement can also foster a lack of gratitude and contentment, which are crucial aspects of the Christian faith. Philippians 4:11-12 reminds us, "Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need." This passage emphasizes the importance of being content and thankful in all circumstances, rather than feeling entitled and always wanting more.
To avert entitled behavior in the modern environment, Christians can turn to Romans 12:3, which says, "For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned." This verse reminds us to hold a humble and realistic view of ourselves and avoid the trap of entitlement. Additionally, we can cultivate a heart of gratitude and contentment through daily prayer and thanksgiving, as outlined in 1 Thessalonians 5:18.
In summary, the negative effects of entitlement are clearly outlined in the Bible, and as Christians, it is important to be aware of these and actively work toward avoiding them. By staying humble, content, and grateful, we can combat entitled behavior and strive to live a life that aligns with Jesus' teachings.

This Week's Topic: "GAMBLING"
The negative effects of gambling have been documented throughout history and can also be found in the Bible. One of the biblical aspects of gambling is the temptation to rely on luck or chance rather than trusting in God’s providence and provision. In Proverbs 28:22, it says, “A stingy man hastens after wealth and does not know that poverty will come upon him.” This verse warns against the desire for quick gains through gambling, which ultimately leads to financial ruin.
Additionally, gambling can also lead to addictive behavior and the pursuit of material possessions, which contradicts the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 6:19-20, where he urges his followers to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth. In today’s modern society, gambling has become even more accessible through technology and online platforms. Christians can resist this temptation by remembering 1 Corinthians 6:12, where it states, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful.
All things are lawful for me, but I will not be enslaved by anything.” This verse reminds us that although something may be permissible, it may not be beneficial for us. We must be vigilant and guard our hearts and minds against the allure of easy money and the potential harm it can cause. As Ephesians 5:15-16 says, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time because the days are evil.” Therefore, we must make wise decisions and not be swayed by the temptations of gambling in today’s society.
